Crystals have been used in cultures all over the world for thousands of years. Their uses have included healing, meditation, protection, and creative inspiration.
One of the most popular crystals is the rose quartz.
The use of rose quartz is said to date back as far as 7000 BC. It’s also been claimed that Egyptian and Roman women used rose quartz face masks to clear their complexions and prevent wrinkles.
Today rose quartz is often used as jewelry, for meditation, or as decoration in homes or office spaces.
While there’s no scientific evidence that rose quartz crystals offer any health benefits, they’re still commonly used for healing purposes.
Properties of rose quartz
The rose quartz is a pale pink stone that’s part of the quartz crystal family.
Deeper pink varieties of the stone are sometimes called strawberry rose quartz. Lavender rose quartz varieties are pale purple.
Rose quartz is a mineral composed primarily of silicon dioxide molecules that typically form at about 752°F–1,292°F (400°C–700°C). The crystal can be found across the United States, Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, India, Sweden, and Germany.
Rose quartz is perhaps best known for being the stone of unconditional love. It’s believed by some to emit a strong vibration of:
- emotional healing
“Rose quartz is a powerful healing crystal,” “Its soft, gentle, almost pastel pale pink coloring is a good indication of its most commonly known property: that of pure love. It’s a stone of both giving and receiving love.”
However, it’s important to note that there’s a lack of research to support these claims. In fact, there’s very little evidence to support the benefits of crystals at all.
An older study in 1999 and 2001 but never published in a peer-reviewed journal) suggests that any spiritual, emotional, or healing benefits experienced from crystals may be chalked up to placebo effect.
In the study, 80 volunteers were given booklets explaining the sensations they might experience while holding crystals. Half of the participants were given genuine gemstones, and the other half received fakes made of plastic.
The study found that the participants holding the fake crystals were just as likely to report sensations as those who had been given the real crystals. This implies that any benefits of rose quartz or other crystals could be a result of the power of suggestion.
Even so, many still use crystals as part of their healing practice.
Use in healing
The rose quartz is believed to embody powerful healing qualities that may be beneficial both for physical and emotional health.
It’s said that rose quartz can:
- heal relationships problems
- promote mutual understanding
- inspire an attitude of compassion and kindness
It’s also believed it can boost feelings of:
“Predominantly, rose quartz is a crystal of unconditional love that brings deep healing to the heart by opening the heart chakra,” “Once achieved, a deeper state of calmness, serenity, and peace is reached, which ultimately results in complete relaxation, encouraging the feelings of happiness and contentment.”
The rose quartz is also believed to have benefits for physical health, particularly when worn or carried on your body.
- promotes a clearer complexion
- can accelerate healing
- boosts neuron activity
“Rose quartz increases blood circulation in the body and is especially powerful when worn close to the heart,” “Rose quartz wards off negativity, and when carried on your person, helps to replace negative emotions with positive, returning the wearer to that place of pure love and balance.”
That said, you should never use a crystal to replace the advice and treatment of a qualified healthcare practitioner. Any supposed benefits of rose quartz are purely anecdotal. There’s no scientific evidence to indicate that rose quartz crystals offer benefits beyond those supplied by placebo.
Still, crystals may be an important part of cultural, spiritual, and healing practices for many.
It’s believed among crystal healers that rose quartz can promote feelings of self-love.
“Rose quartz may be used to balance emotional health, release emotional blockages, and balance other chakras,” “Once you recognize and feel pure love within you, this pure love energy is what those around you feel and see and most importantly what they react to.”
Some recommend the use of rose quartz during meditation.
“In meditation, the high vibration of rose quartz is beneficial not only to yourself but also to the planet,” “Connecting to rose quartz with meditation enables you to reach into that feeling of bliss, self-love, and stillness.”
When meditating with rose quartz, I recommend giving thanks to the crystal as you close your practice.
It’s believed by some that rose quartz may be beneficial for the skin. Rose quartz rollers are sometimes recommended to improve skin clarity and remove wrinkles.
“For the skin, rose quartz can be used as an elixir made up by steeping the crystal in water overnight, in moonlight if at all possible, to charge the energies for maximum benefit,” “This can then be used as a face wash for sensitive skin or to reduce the signs of wrinkles and obtain a clearer, more youthful complexion. The elixir is also useful for cleansing small cuts and grazes.”
How to use
Wearing rose quartz on a necklace keeps the stone close to your heart. I suggest this is particularly potent.
“As a necklace, rose quartz is especially powerful because it’s worn close to the heart and heart chakra. This enables the heart center to open and release any tensions or stresses held there,”
Under your pillow
I suggest that placing a rose quartz under your pillow will encourage gentle dreams.
“You’ll take on the soft, peaceful, soothing energies of the crystal as you sleep,” “This will result in your dream being calm, peaceful, and loving, once again emitting a positive vibration.”
In your home
You may like to place a rose quartz crystal in your home or office space.
“Placing a piece of rose quartz in the center of your house or apartment will enhance compassion and heart healing for the whole family,”
Rose quartz is known as a healing crystal and the stone of unconditional love. It’s believed by some to emit strong vibrations of love, which are thought to:
support emotional and relationship healing
boost feelings of peace and calm
Some also claim that rose quartz may be beneficial to physical health by accelerating healing and increasing blood circulation, but there’s no scientific evidence to support this.
While there aren’t any known side effects to using quartz crystal for healing and meditation, it’s important to remember that any claims about their healing properties are anecdotal.
Still, if the symbolism and aesthetic of rose quartz crystal resonates with you, there’s likely no harm in giving it a try
'''HOW TO CLEANSING YOUR ROSE QUARTZ CRYSTAL'''
Many people use crystals to soothe their mind, body, and soul. Some believe that crystals act on an energetic level, sending natural vibrations out into the world.
Crystals often travel long distances, from source to seller, before a purchase is made. Each transition exposes the stone to energies that may be misaligned with your own.
And when used for healing, these stones are said to absorb or redirect the negativity you’re working to release.
1. Running water
Water is said to neutralize any negative energy stored inside the stone and return it back to the earth. Although natural running water — like a stream — is best, you can also rinse your stone under a faucet.
Whatever your water source, ensure that your stone is completely submerged. Pat dry when complete.
Approximate duration: 1 minute per stone
2. Salt water
Salt has been used throughout history to absorb unwanted energy and banish negativity.
If you’re near the ocean, consider collecting a bowl of fresh salt water. Otherwise, mix a tablespoon of sea, rock, or table salt into a bowl of water.
Make sure that your stone is completely submerged, and allow it to soak for a few hours to a few days’ time. Rinse and pat dry when complete.
Approximate duration: up to 48 hours
3. Brown rice
This method can also be used to draw out negativity in a safe and contained setting. It’s especially beneficial for protective stones, such as black tourmaline.
To do this, fill a bowl with dry brown rice and bury your stone beneath the grains. Dispose of the rice immediately after the cleansing, as the rice is said to have absorbed the energy you’re trying to eradicate.
Approximate duration: 24 hours
4. Natural light
Although ritual cleansing is often centered around certain points in the solar or lunar cycle, you can set your stone out at any time to cleanse and recharge.
Set your stone out before nightfall and plan to bring it in before 11 a.m. This will allow your stone to bathe in the light of both the moon and sun.
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may weather the stone’s surface, so make sure you return for it in the morning.
If you’re able to, place your stone directly on the earth. This will allow for further cleansing. Wherever they are, ensure they won’t be disturbed by wildlife or passersby.
Afterward, give the stone a quick rinse to remove any dirt and debris. Pat dry.
Approximate duration: 10 to 12 hours
Sage is a sacred plant with a multitude of healing properties. Smudging your stone is said to clear inharmonious vibrations and restore its natural energy.
- a firesafe bowl
- a lighter or matches
- loose or bundled sage
If you’re unable to smudge outdoors, make sure you’re near an open window. This will allow the smoke and negative energy to disperse.
When you’re ready, ignite the tip of the sage with the flame. Transfer the sage to your nondominant hand and firmly grasp your stone and move it through the smoke.
Allow the smoke to envelop the stone for about 30 seconds. If it’s been a while since your last cleansing — or you feel the stone is holding onto a lot — consider smudging for an additional 30 seconds.
Approximate duration: about 30 to 60 seconds per stone
Sound healing allows a single pitch or tone to wash over an area, bringing it into the same vibration as the tone.
This can be accomplished using chanting, singing bowls, a tuning fork, or even a nice bell. It doesn’t matter what key the sound is, so long as the sound emitted is loud enough for the vibration to fully encompass the stone.
This method is ideal for collectors who have a large volume of crystals not easily inventoried or moved.
Approximate duration: 5 to 10 minutes
Breathwork can also be an effective cleansing method.
To get started, hold the stone in your dominant hand. Focus on your intention for a moment and deeply inhale through your nostrils.
Bring the stone closer to your face and exhale short, forceful breaths through the nose and onto the stone to bring the stone to its highest vibration.
Approximate duration: about 30 seconds
Although this is considered the safest way to clear stones, it can be intimidating for some. The more in tune you are with your sense of self, the easier it may be to redirect your energy to the stone you want to restore.
Take a few minutes to ground and center your energy, then pick up your stone and visualize your hands filling with white, radiant light.
See this light surround the stone and feel it growing brighter in your hands. Envision the impurities flushing out of the stone, allowing the stone to shine brighter with renewed purpose.
Continue this visualization until you feel a shift in the stone’s energy.
Approximate duration: about 1 minute
The more often you use a stone, the more energy it collects. A good rule of thumb is to clear all of your stones at least once a month.
If an individual stone is feeling heavier than usual, go ahead and cleanse it. You don’t have to wait a designated amount of time between clearings.
What is the best method for clearing stones?
Find a method that resonates with you and your practices. What works best for you may not work as well for someone else, so pay attention to what feels right.
How do I know when a stone is cleansed?
The stone should feel energetically and physically lighter to the touch.
What should I do with my stones after they’ve been cleansed?
Find mindful places to keep your stones. If you can, keep them near windows or plants so they can absorb this natural healing energy. Otherwise, place the stones around your home, office, or other space in a way that aligns with your intentions.
The bottom line
When we care for our crystals, we’re caring for ourselves. We’re allowing energy that’s inharmonious with our lives and intentions to leave in a peaceful and healing manner.
Taking these small measures allows us to be more mindful in our interactions with the stones, with ourselves, and with others.
